Is Shift Work Making You Stupid? New Study Released:

Ucase Looks at New Shift Work Vs Sleep Report.

Can't Sleep: Won't Sleep

Can’t Sleep: Won’t Sleep

Scientists Claim that long-term shift work could be impairing brain function, including an impact on mental abilities (as in ability to think) and memory.
We all know that working shifts can take it’s toll, but a recent French study suggests that long-term shift-work could be doing more than leaving you feeling tired and grumpy.

The study involved 3000 participants and suggests that those working rotating shifts (between morning, afternoon, night) were affected the most.

  • This report suggests that 10 years of shift work will take 6 years off your memory and thinking skills.
“The level of cognitive decline seen in people who worked irregular shifts for 10 years was equivalent to six and a half years’ worth of natural, age-related cognitive decline, said researchers from the universities of Toulouse and Swansea”.
  • With damage to 1500 genes there are concerns of a wide range of health problems.

  • This damage is also long-term, though not irreversible. Monitored shift-workers who stopped working shifts did show gradual recovery, but one that took a least 5 years.

  • Lack of Sunlight Causes Poor Mental Ability.
Although not fully understood, it is recognised that disrupting the body clock may affect brain functioning. Also, A Vitamin D deficiency from lack of sunlight may cause poor mental ability.
  • The study showed (un-surprisingly), that Problems increased with the length of time people worked shifts.

  • Other studies also suggest that in addition to disrupting your body clock, shift workers simply get less sleep, in order to maintain a home and family routine.
If you’re affected there are some things YOU can do.

  • Allow Yourself MORE Sleep.
Easier said than done – It’s common that some people will struggle to sleep on particular shifts. Commonly, sleeping after a night shift is difficult. For others it’s the Early shift that’s a struggle.
  • We all have responsibilities but when your body does allow you to sleep it’s a good idea to listen to itwhenever possible. A continuous un-broken sleep is better.

  • Try not to drink caffeinated drink close to bed time, avoid distractions such as TV and social media before sleeping.

  • Eat foods that are Naturally high in Vitamnin D: If you’re not sure what these are then this (somewhat cheesy) video from howcast.com could help:

Sleep-Related Smartphone Apps
There are also sleep related smartphone apps on most platforms now that claim to improve sleep in a variety of ways. In this article we won’t won’t get into the debate of how effective these are. However, many of them do have some scientific merit and their popularity indicates that they are proving useful to thousands of people.

Below are 2 examples covering Andoid and IOS:
